According to Kotaku 1000 people are planned to be cut from EA so looks like you were dead on there. What a crappy time to annouce a big layoff? Why wouldnt they wait just a few more days until after Xmas?
EA even hates The Baby Jesus it seems.

I cannot really find a single reason to contribute to the downfall of Need For Speed, but it seems that Black Box have not either - and nor have they found a way to bring it back to its former glory. With Criterion at the helm, I think they can do the game justice - I just hope it does not turn out to be a Burnout clone.

I definitely agree Rick, I think a good racing franchise would def. make it a better game or at least add some good concepts to a franchise that EA doesn't know how to innovate.

I highly doubt Need For Speed is getting axed. It's a guaranteed million seller every year. However, it might do a lot better under Criterion or some other developer.

Here is another rumour ... Electronic Arts might be letting the Need For Speed franchise go, either giving it to another developer (Criterion), shutting down one of the developer studios or even dropping it full stop. Either way, this is news I did not want to hear.
